How to choose a wedding dress for your body type

Today we ask one of the most important questions in your wedding dress shopping journey: “How do you find the perfect dress for your body type?” We recommend starting with the right silhouette for your body shape, whether that be hourglass, rectangle, petite, pear-shaped, or busty. You’re not likely to fit squarely into one category, but you can combine tips from each style to find the perfect wedding dress for your body type, no matter your shape!

Let’s start with these simple tips to help you find the perfect wedding dress for your body type.

1) Hourglass

If your hips and bust are nearly equal in size and you have a well-defined waist that’s narrower than both, you have an hourglass shape.

  • Flaunt your curves! Choose a corset and/or mermaid wedding gown that accents and flatters your natural curves. A fit-and-flare wedding dress is also a good option.
  • If a ballgown strikes your fancy, opt for a structured bodice and full skirt to keep the flattering shape of your curves.
  • Stick with a sweetheart neckline to complement your feminine shape.

2)   Rectangle

If you have a smaller chest, hips and undefined curves, your body shape is a rectangle.

  • Remember that structure should be your partner in crime, as it adds padding to make your chest appear fuller. For example a dress with a bustier bodice.
  • Go for ruching, wrapping, and embellishment in the bodice to help play up your décolletage.
  • Instead of trying to make your breasts look larger, wear something only a small-chested woman can rock: a narrow plunging V-neck and V-back.
  • Add a detachable skirt overlay to your fitted dress to create more shape

3) Pear shape

The pear shape body is characterized by wider hips and a smaller upper body. Other caharacteristics include narrow shoulders and smaller bust.

  • If you want to draw attention away from your waist and hips, wear an A-line or ballgown silhouette. These classic styles look great on almost all body types, but they look best on pear-shaped figures!
  • Opt for an embellished or detailed bodice to accentuate your chest and waistline.

4) Inverted triangle / Busty

Inverted triangle body shapes tend to have broader shoulders, fuller bust which are wider than their lower body.

  • Wear wider straps. A plunging v-neck with wider straps not only shows of your besy assets but provide more support than a thin strap or strapless gown.
  • Choose your neckline wisely. A sweetheart or bateau neckline flatter your figure. Avoid strapless gowns and off the shoulder gowns as they have little support.
  • Corset backs give you the option of tightening the bodice if needed.
  • An aline or princess skirt gives the illusions of wider hips and a narrow waist.

5) Petite
Petite brides tend to choose gowns that elogate their body, while not over-whelming their small frame.
  • Fitted gowns look beautiful on your slender frame
  • Avoid ballgowns with big skirts, which can overwhelm a smaller frame, and certain mermaid styles, which can make your torso appear shorter.
  • Avoid gowns with too many layers, frills or busy details.
  • Elongate your frame with a natural-waisted gown like an A-line or fit-and-flare to avoid looking “scrunched up” or bottom-heavy.
  • Soft, feminine dresses with "cute " details such as tie-up bows suit petite women

One more question to consider when looking for the perfect wedding dress for your body type:

Should I let go of my insecurities and listen to feedback from my close friends and family?

Every bride has things she likes and doesn’t like about her body. It’s important to find a dress that fits your personality and preferences, but don’t let your inner critic take over in the process. We’re willing to bet your loved ones, most importantly your sweetheart, have a much more forgiving perception of your gorgeous features than you do. Moreverover, if you're really unsure, ask your bridal stylist for an unbiased third opinions!

We hope these tips help you in finding wedding gowns that suit you body shape. However, these are only general guides and don't apply to every women and tastes. Pick what makes you comfortable and feel the most beautiful in!
